International Journal: Canada’s Journal of Global Policy Analysis Looks to the Future

When it first began publication in 1946, International Journal aimed, in the words of Canadian Institute of International Affairs (now the Canadian International Council) President R.M. Fowler, to “contribute in a substantial way to the knowledge of Canadians on problems of international relations and [to] express to other countries the Canadian viewpoint on international questions.” Nearly eighty years later, with almost 320 issues published, International Journal continues to be the leading Canadian venue for informed analysis of global politics for political scientists and historians as well as policymakers, politicians, and diplomats. As its new editors, our mission is to continue this proud tradition while also ensuring that the journal reaches new audiences and features the writings of a wider array of contributors both in academia and outside of it.

In our role as editors, we are committed to showcasing innovative scholarly research and timely public debates about global affairs and the policy choices that shape the world in which we live. This commitment reflects our belief that rigorous, informed analyses and critical reflection are of fundamental importance as we contend with the tumult disrupting the lives of people in Canada and elsewhere. From mitigating the impacts of climate change and forefending against pandemic illnesses to challenges to international legal and economic regimes and revisionist powers’ efforts to upend the global status quo, there are a plethora of issues commanding our collective attention and demanding action. 

We recognize that realizing our commitment requires a more diverse authorship as well as more diversity in the form of contribution that we publish. The authors who publish in International Journal explore global history and politics from broad and varied analytical perspectives and frameworks, and offer explorations from scholars, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the field. We are eager to expand who participates in the conversations published in our pages that help shape who we are and our place in the world and welcome your queries and suggestions. 

We are also offering new thematic sections of the journal, including a ‘Field Report’ offering an ear to the ground on developments in academe, as well as briefs on featured conferences and events to complement our scholarly essays, policy briefs, and book reviews. Further, we welcome commentary and analysis from those at the forefront of policymaking, namely officials in government and various international and non-governmental organizations. As we look to ‘IJ’s’ future, we encourage your contributions to this dialogue and to our efforts to fulfil the founding mission of the journal.
