Dawson: Should Canada cut ties with the monarchy and become a republic?

Does Canada lose international credibility because of ties to the monarchy that are more nostalgic than practical? I used to believe my American friends when they said this, then I caught them all watching the Will and Kate royal wedding last summer. It’s a fine balance. Not important to me but for an older generation perhaps it is.
