With an MA in plant genetics Carla started her career working during a famine in Ethiopia, followed by a focus on food security issues in Zimbabwe. In British Columbia she has worked with environmental, health research, children’s health, and First Nations organizations. She is dedicated to understanding ways for nonprofit organizations to become resilient and thrive. Her areas of focus are philanthropy, organizational management, governance and leadership, and knowledge mobilization in international development. She also holds a PhD from Royal Roads University (2016), studying international philanthropy in Tanzania, partially examining how donor decisions influence nonprofits. In 2017, she completed a research partnership with Development Action Canada, translating her doctoral research into leadership skills training workshops.
Groups of five or more Canadians have been successfully sponsoring refugees abroad to come and live in Canada for many years – providing hope for those in need while building a better Canada.
