Open Canada is a volunteer-run foreign policy focused online magazine.
All submissions are thoroughly reviewed prior to publication and while we attempt to publish as many articles as we can, constraints include a limited publication budget and an all-volunteer staff. During the review process, we may decide that articles are not suitable for publication and we will endeavour to inform authors as to why.
We welcome authors from all backgrounds and encourage contributors to focus on their core areas of expertise. Authors are also responsible for the content of their papers and their views do not necessarily represent those of Open Canada, the Canadian International Council or its staff.
Topics of Interest
Our topics of interest are wide-ranging and we advise authors to review the articles we have on Open Canada for content and style and submit pitches before sending complete articles to us.
All articles should be the author’s original work and be succinct, well written, and referenced accordingly.
Formatting
Submitted articles should follow these guidelines:
- Title
- Sub-title
- BY: AUTHOR NAME
- Main body (1,000 to 2,500 words), Word document, single-spaced, Times New Roman, 12pt and using hyperlinks for references
- Acronyms and Abbreviations — must be fully spelled out when they first appear
- Canadian Spelling — use Canadian spelling (-ize for words like organize and -re for words like centre)
- Contractions — avoid use of contractions like don’t, can’t, shouldn’t
- Currency — write out in number form: $200, $2,000, $2 million
- Dates — 1 October 2018; 2000-2018; the 2000s; the 21st century
- Foreign Words — italicize unfamiliar foreign words and phrases
- Names — double-check the spelling of all names
- Numbers — write out numbers below twenty and write out ordinals up to 10th (first, second, third etc.)
- Percentages — use percent. For example, 10 percent
- Quotation Marks — use double quotation marks
Prior to Publication
Prior to publication, authors will be requested to provide a headshot and short biography that demonstrates that they are qualified to write authoritatively on the subject matter in their article.
