More Bang For Your Education Buck

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) ranking has become an important measure of how the eduction systems in different countries stack up against each other (even if the scores don’t always tell the full story). But what educational inputs translate to higher scores? In the graphic below, we follow the money by comparing average spending per student with how well those students performed in mathematics. As the graphic shows, more spending on education doesn’t necessarily mean better educational outcomes, especially for wealthier countries.
