Will Canada and the European Union Sign a Free Trade Agreement in 2013?

CIC | February 19, 2013

Please join the Canadian International Council for a timely discussion on the consequences of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to Brussels in 2013 and the potential for free trade agreement between Canada and the EU.

Speaker’s Biography: After graduating in law from the University of Bonn, Germany, and Osgoode Hall Law School, Canada, Mr. Von Lingen joined the staff of the European Commission and, subsequently, that of the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg. Between 1973 and 2004, he held various positions in the EP’s civil service responsible for public relations, culture, education, social affairs; and in 1990 was assigned to the Directorate General for External Relations and its newly created documentation and analysis center on Central and Eastern Europe. From 1996 onwards, he worked within the presidency of the European Parliament in Brussels, being responsible for Parliament’s cooperation with the parliaments of the accession and candidate countries. He has also published articles on European issues such as the Common Foreign and Security Policy, parliamentary diplomacy and specific questions relating to federalism and educational programs.

After retiring from EU institutions, he founded and now chairs EquipEuropa, a Brussels-based non-profit organization, operating as a network of partners, following a practice-oriented training concept in European Public Affairs for individuals, enterprises and institutions wishing to work within the framework of the European Union.

Mr. Von Lingen is married to a French Canadian and has two adult children.
